Aprofessor at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business was so troubled watching the media coverage of the Syrian migrant crisis, showing tens of thousands of refugees flee- ing their home country that was embroiled in a bloody civil war. Many packed their families
onto overloaded vessels in a desperate attempt to cross the
Mediterranean Sea to seek safety in Europe.
The images of frightened, exhausted refugees reaching safe
shore with nowhere to go and nothing to do were difficult for
her to take in. But it was a photo of 700,000 life jackets discarded into a massive pile on the shores of the Greek island of
Lesbos that sparked an idea to bring about a positive.
“I thought, let’s create a program that puts refugees to work
in a manufacturing facility disposing of life jackets with small
tools to break down the items into usable components, then
“upcycle” the materials into small items like raincoats, handbags and duffel bags. Then, my business students will work on
global marketing and start selling them,” says Eve Geroulis,
who teaches marketing to business students at the university,
with a focus on globalization and sustainability.
“All the profits would be reinvested into a higher-education
center in Athens for refugees, to provide education to children
and young adults to help them integrate into Western culture.
This is a chance to teach my young marketing students that
you can do good and affect the bottom line. It can be a win-
Earlier this year, there were an estimated 56,000 Syrian
refugees in Greece, many living on the streets. Geroulis is
recruiting powerful friends from her 20 years working in the
advertising world to raise an estimated $20,000 to $40,000
needed to get the program off ground. She’s working with
business groups committed to helping refugees on the ground.
“I want to teach young people how they can tackle the
world’s social challenges,” Geroulis explains. “To empower
them to address social problems using the tools of business.”
