Classic Craft Of Wood And Glass
Following a pre-event week of cruising local lakes, a flotilla of classic boats, including fiberglass models and antique wood watercraft, will be on display September
25 and 26 at the Bar Harbor Supper Club, on Minnesota’s Gull Lake. The Woods
and Water 2015 event ( www.woodsandwater2015.org) is part of the 40th Antique &
Classic Boat Society’s (ACBS) International Boat Show, hosted by the Land-O-Lakes
ACBS Chapter, representing Minnesota and western Wisconsin, and open to
the public. — D.A.
100 miles offshore. But did you know
that on occasion we’ve got the U.S.
Coast Guard’s back, too? The BoatU.S.
California Service Center occasionally
steps in when the Coast Guard requires
maintenance of its Rescue 21 system.
Routine maintenance involves the Coast
Guard taking its sites offline, which prevents the agency from answering emergency calls on VHF Channel 16. When
the Coast Guard is planning repairs, it
asks BoatU.S. to relay any hails for assistance, and Coast Guard Auxiliary staff
help monitor our VHF radios.
Heather Sheward, assistant vice president of towing operations at the California
Service Center, says that the center has
answered calls from boaters when out of
range of the Coast Guard VHF radios
from our Newport Beach office. “We strive
to work with the Coast Guard and multiple
municipalities to ensure that every boater
who needs assistance is answered over
VHF radio promptly and that a proper
resource is sent out to assist.” — A.D.
