February’s article by Terri Parrow Botsford, “Memories on the
Rideau Canal,” (Feb. 2014) brought back so many fond memories.
My own experiences traveling from our homeport of Ithaca, New
York, on Cayuga Lake practically mirrored Ms. Botsford’s. The years
were identical, as was the Owens cabin cruiser. We may have even
traveled through the locks together. We, too, became lost on Lake
Ontario on a very hazy day, traveling by compass. The Coast Guard
came to our rescue and directed us to Cape Vincent, where we had
about a gallon of gas in the tank! We also spent time anchored off
Galloo Island. I remember fishing there and catching some of the
biggest perch ever. My parents instilled the love of boating in us,
and we so enjoyed the summer-long travels through the Erie Barge
and Rideau Canal!
My husband (an avid fisherman) and I trailer our Triumph center
console wherever the sun is shining and the fish are biting. Thanks
for the memories! Linda Clugstone Ekenberry

It was great to see the article by Terri Parrow Botsford. It’s unfortunate she did not progress to “my” lock. My parents owned a home
at Clowes lock. When my daughter was a year old (she’s now 41),
my husband and I took her from there to Kingston in a 14-foot
runabout. She had to wear an old kapok life jacket that stuck out
so far she couldn’t crawl, so she decided to learn to walk on that
trip. What a wonderful time that was, camping at night on the lock
riverbank and helping the lockmaster take us through.
Our daughter is now an accomplished bluewater sailor, I’m
sure, in part, due to her early exposure to boating. Thanks for your
great magazine. Jane Wright
I’ve been devouring boating magazines for (ouch) 50 years. You
name it, I subscribe to it. Without question, BoatU.S. Magazine
has become my very favorite. It gets better with each issue, and
I can’t wait to receive the next one. You’re to be commended for
providing the boating public with a consistent wealth of information
and entertainment. Jan M Dreher
LEDs MAYBE NOT SO BAD?
Reflecting on “Let There Be LEDs” (Dec. 2013) and the Reader
Forum letters in your Feb/Mar issue decrying LEDs, I went to
your archives and reread your LED story. It was interesting, and I
