REPORTS | NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF AMERICAN BOATING EDITED BY RYCK LYDECKER Boat U.S.
THE ART OF THE BOATER Gustave Caillebotte was an
avid boater who painted maritime and boating scenes, like Skiffs on
the Yerres, from 1877. In Impressionists On The Water, Christopher
Lloyd writes that Caillebotte’s “depictions of yachts amount to the
most comprehensive and accurate survey of the sport in the history
of art.” Caillebotte taught fellow painter Georges Seurat how to sail,
ran a boatyard near his home, and became one of France’s leading
yacht designers and racers.
