Chapman Piloting & Seamanship,
By Charles B. Husick
The latest edition of Chapman’s, as it’s fondly
called by generations of boaters, is like a boating
encyclopedia all in one book, and it’s a must-have
on every boat. This newest edition authored by the
late, great, Chuck Husick, following in Elbert S.
Maloney’s legendary footsteps, is thoroughly updated with the latest information on rules, regulations,
and technology, covering boat handling, navigation,
and etiquette as well as updates of laws and contact
information for various government agencies. It is
928 pages of everything you’d ever need to know,
plus 1,500 full-color illustrations and charts, and
exploded views and cutaways.
The revisions from the last edition include the latest developments in outboard
motors and inboard vectored thrust propulsion systems, including joystick controls,
new mayday procedures, using VHF/DSC radio and Rescue 21, networking electronic devices, features and capabilities of GPS, radar, depth sounders, fish finders,
chart plotters, autopilot, NMEA 2000, and more. It’s the boater’s bible and every
nav station or book locker is incomplete without it.
Author Husick was well known to BoatU.S. members as a BoatU.S. National
Advisory Council member and contributing writer on technical questions, in print
and online at the Ask The Experts site, www.BoatUS.com/Ask. A sailor and aircraft
pilot, he was the former president of Chris-Craft. — E.D.
less sailboats that they built themselves to
exacting standards of strength and beauty,
and sailed several times around the world.
Throughout their writing, and their boating, their philosophy has always been: “Go
small, go simple, go now,” because the less
gear you have, they firmly believe, the less
trouble you’ll have, and the sooner you’ll
be out there. It’s worked for them.
Overall, the book’s subject matter is
vast, perhaps somewhat jumpy at times,
but yet is consistently comprehensive as it
imparts the Pardeys wisdom through personal stories and step-by-step advice.
Before my husband and I set off
cruising, we read books by the Pardeys,
and brought a couple of them with us as
reference books to keep aboard. Looking
back over the years, now that we’re home
again, and hopefully wiser to the ways of
the cruising world, I can attest to the value
of these books. To the novice, they are
indisputably valuable as teaching tools; for
the experienced boater, they’re impressive
compendiums of techniques that work,
and are full of inspiration. — S.B.
