Under Southern Skies: “Ocean Watch rests at anchor in the Falkland Islands before heading west
to Cape Horn. To capture the image we launched the dinghy late in the evening to get the sun angle
low. I positioned us so the rigging would block the direct sun and create more of a silhouette effect.
The image represented the calm before the tension of Cape Horn. It was photographed with a Nikon
D700 and a 17-35mm zoom.”

The Kids Have It: “A big part of the Around the
Americas expedition was composed of education with a curriculum designed for K- 8 children. Thousands of children visited Ocean Watch
in North and South America. Coloring pictures
of the boat and writing notes about our seas
and oceans was a great little task for kids and
many came up with thoughtful messages.”
s
Love Is In The Air: “To photograph these tortoises
in the Galapagos Islands more closely, but from a
respectful distance, I used my Nikon D700 and a
Nikkor 80-400mm lens to illustrate the intimacy
of these large animals threatened with extinction.”
s
Floating Office: “In addition to navigating, maintaining, and sailing the boat, the crew of Ocean Watch
recorded scientific data, and educated through dispatches to schools and to the Pacific Science
Center. In our daily routine, we all had our work-stations.”
s
The New Gold Rush: “We sailed into Nome, Alaska, just before the Fourth
of July last year. Most people don’t know there’s a new gold rush happening in the far north. This shot of a gold dredge illustrates the Wild West
spirit of the place.”
s
Food For Thought: “Hunting and fishing provide the staples of the Inuit diet in the
Arctic, and the small hamlet of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, Canada, had many fish out drying
on a warm summer afternoon. The color and arrangement of the fish, especially the
Arctic char, provided a great opportunity for an image with the Nikon D700 and Nikkor
80-400mm lens. It’s shot tight in full frame.”
