“All The Brothers Were Valiant,” is
another whaling and adventure film that
I bet you haven’t heard of. This was
made in 1953 and stars Robert Taylor,
Stuart Granger and Ann Blyth, with James
Whitmore as the heavy. It’s about a family
that owns whaling ships in 1850s New
Bedford; the brothers are the captains.
I saw it in 1953 when it came out and
couldn’t find it in the video era until I
found a copy on eBay. Also, “Twilight For
The Gods” was about an early 20th Century
voyage on a brigantine in the South Pacific.
The captain, Rock Hudson, agrees to take
a mysterious woman, Lauren Bacall, to
Mexico, but the ship is old and sinking so
they have to stop in Hawaii.

Much Older Graveyard
Your item “WWII Ship Located in
Atlantic Graveyard” (January BoatU.S.
Reports) mentioned the U.S. and British
naval vessels, German U-boats and merchant ships that sank there during the
Battle of the Atlantic in World War II.

Taking A Dive
I am a BoatU.S. member and just read
your article “From the Flatlands to the
Deep Blue.” I am a stakeholder in the diving industry and got my start many years
ago on the reefs off of Fort Lauderdale. I
enjoyed your article. It was factual, well
written, and hopefully issues the challenge
of certification to the reader. With respect
to an industry that is flat, hopefully your
article will send some non-divers into their
local dive shop. — David K. Stancil

Where Our Flags Fly
Every issue of BoatU.S. Magazine celebrates the landfalls and everyday joys our readers experience aboard their boats.
1 “This photo of Sandbagger, our Columbia 29, was taken while out on a
day sail on Lake Erie,” John and Doris Shea tell us. Doris is at the helm as the
boat sails from its homeport at the Ford Yacht Club on Grosse Ile, Michigan,

2 “This is our little speedboat Damned Donzi moored just off Peanut Island,
at the Port of Palm Beach, Lake Worth Inlet,” says Andy DiSario who has been
boating the clear, warm waters of Southern Florida for the past 20 years. “The
picture shows my wife Fern in the boat. I refer to it as our ‘Corvette on the
water’ because it performs like a floating version of our red Corvette; but corners
more like our motorcycle. Fern calls it a ‘white knuckle ride’!” The DiSarios
boat year-round and enjoy taking people through the Keys, the Atlantic — with
occasional porpoise and sea-turtle sightings — the Intracoastal, Gulf of Mexico
and on inland lakes. “Last winter, when the water was too cool for us to swim,
we began a new adventure — boating in the Everglades along with scores of
alligators and literally hundreds of large, migrating birds!”

3 Knowing how to live the good life obviously comes like second nature to
this Texas family. “This photograph is of our typical Saturday, anchored with
our friends from South Shore Marina on Pier 2 — the party pier,” says Jeffrey
Richard. “Our boat Lone Palm is a 40-foot Carver and we enjoy cruising out of
our homeport of Clear Lake, Texas.” The family also spends time in Matagorda
Bay, and Port Aransas, Texas. — The Richards Family
